Location and general description

Situated a couple of kilometers S.W. of Wantage on a branch of the river Ock. This is a large parish and includes the chapelries of East and West Challow.

The manor of ANTWICKS (formerly ANWICKS)

Richard ALDWORTH of Wargrave, purchased the manor from Edmund FETTIPLACE 1627–8 (Page and Ditchfield, 1924)

The FETTIPLACE family

The FETTIPLACE family of this area were closely linked with those of Swinbrook, Oxon.

The HATTON family

At enclosure in 1801-4 William HATTON of Childrey, gent and Richard BELCHER of Sparsholt, gent acted as trustees of Thomas HATTON, lord of the manor of West Challow, Berks., concerning land in Letcombe Regis and West Challow.

Amongst the HATTONs of nearby West Challow, Berks, is a Richard Hatton BELCHER son of Thomas HATTON, whilst at nearby Childrey, Berks, is a Richard Hatton BELCHER (1801-) son of  Joseph BELCHER and Charlotte (nee HATTON).

In his 1804 Will, Thomas HATTON bequeathed the 'manor [of PETWICK or WEST CHALLOW]' to be sold for the benefit of his children Richard Belcher, William, Anne wife of John Reade and Rebecca' [Page & Ditchfield, 1924, n.p.]
