Location and general
description
Attached to the lost village of Hazeleford, Oxon.
The Oxford Historic Environment Record (PRN 6) notes that it was
shown
on 1882 edition 1:2500 OS map.1086 and gives its location as grid ref
SP 4047 3902, near Broughton, Oxon. (SP4039 at
www.geograph.org.uk) The site therefore lies about 0.5
Km SSW of
Broughton Grounds Farm and about 0.5 Km upstream of Fulling
Mill
Farm.
Buildings
The Oxford Historic Environment Record (PRN 6) is for a
building,
but there is none shown on the current OS map. A leat leaves the Sor
Brook about 0.5 Km upstream and rejoins it at about this point.
Wilfred Foreman states that this is 'site only' (Foreman,
1983, pg 109)
History
Originally a corn mill (Foreman, 1983, pg 109)
Converted to paper mill in 1792 (Oxford Historic Environment Record,
PRN 6)
On the 1841 Census the following papermakers were living at the mill:
- There
is a Sarah SELLERS (aged 70) who is living on independent
means and has two servants, and a William SELLERS (aged 40) who is
'Paper Manufacturer', accompanied by Rebecca his wife, several children
and has three servants
- William & Elizabth BROOKS
- John & Elizabeth MALINS
On the 1851 Census the following paper makers families were living at
this mill:
- John HAYDE or FLOYDE (aged 50, born Hatfield Herts) and his wife Ann;
- Samuel HUGHES (aged 57, born Price
Risbro, Bucks) and his wife Mary;
- John MALING (aged 36, born Redford, Notts) and his wife Elizabeth;
- George SAUNDERS
(aged 32, born Stythens, Cornwall).
Some of the accomodation at the mill was taken by the family of agricultural labourer Edward COOLING.
Closed soon after 1851, when it may still have been a
papermill (Oxford Historic Environment Record, PRN 6).

the Parish and Village of Broughton and the family comprised

John MALING is probably the son of John MALINS, paper maker at

On the 1851 Census they were living at 4 Hazleford Mill in the Parish
and Village of Broughton and the family comprised

Stythians, Cornwall
- Rebecca SAUNDERS, Wife, Mar, Age 25, , born Wookey
Hole, Somersetshire.
- Thomas Henry SAUNDERS, Son, , Age 2, , born N. Newington,
