Who was Elizabeth Jordan's father?
Return to Bull Line Page

From her tombstone we know that Elizabeth was born about 1721 and from research on Will's we know that she had at one time been Elizabeth JORDAN. From tracing back the family in her Will we know that she had a sister Mary who appears to have married John KEMPSTER and her daughter Mary then married William MONK a Wheelwright and Blacksmith of Burford (a full transcription has been produced for the probate record for the Will of William MONK, a copy is available to download from this Probate records page). Her husband Thomas HATTON appears to have been a man of substance.
The only Burford christening of an Elizabeth JORDAN around the relevant time was on 1 Dec 1721 when one John JORDAN  christened a daughter called Elizabeth. There was also a Mary JORDAN christening in Burford at around that time (13 Aug 1722) and again by John JORDAN. Unfortunately, the Burford parish registers only give father's names and John JORDAN was a common name in Burford at that time. There are therefore several candidates.

The 1735 Will of John JORDAN is an obvious candidate as he left most of his property to his daughter Elizabeth and he admonishes her 'to have a speciall care in bestowing herself in marriage'. In this he is described as 'gentleman of Burford', as such he was an influential resident of  Burford and a property owner. His Will, which may be summarised as follows:
John Jordan the Elder of Burford
Provides up to £5 for burial in Burford church
Fourty shillings to buy bread for the poor
Wife Mary Jordan to receive his share of personal estate of her late brother John Eve, also £20 and a long list of household items.
Property in Burford and Witney to go to his daughter Elizabeth Jordan (Thomas Clare, John Smith, William Heydon, Joseph **llman, and Thomas Wainwright are mentioned as occupants/tenants)
Property in Burford to go to Daughter Elizabeth (occupied by Richard Cottfield)
Cousin Sarah Wyatt to get a ring worth half a Guinea
The maid to get 10 shillings
Residue to go to his Daughter Elizabeth
A codicil gives his Wife Mary £20 more to be paid by the George Inn in Burford.
Signed – 3 Jul 1735
Proved – 30 Dec
A full transcription has been produced for the probate record for this will, see the Probate Records Index.

The picture evolving from the JORDAN Wills may be seen on this Burford JORDAN family diagram. The mention of the George Inn and property in Witney would seem to link the above John JORDAN to the Witney branch of the family. However, there is an emerging body of evidence that Elizabeth was descended from John JORDAN, the Attorney who married into the TASH family.
