History (from 1675 to 1775)

As it is not currently possible to adequately seperate the history of the mills on Hinksey Stream and Wiers Stream (both being referred to as 'South Hinksey'), they are both dealt with here for the time being.

Originally worked for corn (Foreman, 1983, pg 116).

1675 is given by Wilfred Foreman as the date for the start of paper making in South Hinksey (Foreman, 1983, pg 71).

On 12 April 1758 one Richard ALDER was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, paper maker, from the parish of St Michael (at the North Gate), Oxford. (Oxfordshire Poor Law Name Index, Par/211/5/A1/207)

On 2 Mar 1759 one Elizabeth DEAN was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, paper maker, from the parish of  St Peter in the East, Oxford. (Oxfordshire Poor Law Name Index, Par/213/5/A1/3/114)

On 13 May 1761 one Elizabeth REEVES was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, papermaker, from the parish of St Giles, Oxford. (Oxfordshire Poor Law Name Index, Par/St Giles/c/27)

On 9 Nov 1775 one Thomas EDWARDS, son of Thomas EDWARDS, labourer, was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, papermaker, from the parish of Witney, Oxon. (Oxfordshire Poor Law Name Index, Par/Witney/d/16/37)

The Tate (www.tate.org.uk) holds an oil on wood picture by Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) entitled Wier's Paper Mill, near Oxford and dating from 1835-42. In this the mill appears to be in a delapidated state.

The 1854 Post Office Directory (pg 715) gives TOWEL, J as Paper Manufacturers at South Hinksey.
