History (from 1675 to 1775)
As it is not currently possible to
adequately seperate the history of the mills on Hinksey Stream and
Wiers Stream (both being referred to as 'South Hinksey'), they are both
dealt with here for the time being.
Originally worked for corn (Foreman, 1983, pg 116).
1675 is given by Wilfred Foreman as the date for the start of paper making in South Hinksey (Foreman, 1983, pg 71).
On 12 April 1758 one Richard ALDER
was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, paper maker,

On 2 Mar 1759 one Elizabeth DEAN
was apprenticed to James BROOKES of South Hinksey, Berks, paper maker,
from the parish of St Peter in the East, Oxford. (Oxfordshire

The Tate (www.tate.org.uk) holds an oil on wood picture by Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) entitled Wier's Paper Mill, near Oxford
and dating from 1835-42. In this the mill appears to be in a delapidated state.
The 1854 Post Office Directory (pg 715) gives TOWEL, J as Paper Manufacturers at South Hinksey.
