Location and general description

A tiny village in the arable lands between Great Dunmow, Essex, and Braintree, Essex. It lays just 2 Km SE of  Bardfield Saling, Essex. Between the two villages are Crow Green and Woolpits Farm, both of which have HICKS associations.

18th C Quaker records often refer to simply Saling, Saleing or even Saeling.

Great Saling Hall

Great Saling HallGreat Saling has a fine hall, with adjacent church, that would have been standing when the HICKS family were resident in nearby Bardfield Saling, Essex.

At times the hall's gardens are open to the public.

People

The HICKS family

The entry for Great Saling in the 1848 White's Directory of Essex lists one Charles HICKS of Woolpits under 'Farmers'. Charles was one of the descendants of William HICKS of Felsted, Essex, a village just to the south of Great Saling.
