Castle Cary is a small market town situated to the SE of Shepton Mallet, 24 miles south of Bath, and 12 miles north-east of Yeovil. It has a compact-but-thriving centre, in which there is an impressive market hall. The picture above shows the shops in Fore Street.
Situated at the junction of Ansford Road and Cumnock Road, this late C18, grade II-listed, building is the only surviving house in which the CURTIS family are known to have resided. Henry CURTIS, his wife, and a five year old Fanny CURTIS, were all listed on the 1871 Census as dwelling in Ansford House, Castle Cary, all in the household of, and listed as servants of, an annuitant named Grace SNOOK. His relationship to here is given as "Gardner."

Henry CURTIS (c1828-) moved to Castle Cary from Shepton Mallet and, whist moving around the town quite a bit, he appears to have spent the reminder of his life there. He and his first wife are buried in the churchyard. Full details may be found, elsewhere on this site, in the Biography of Henry CURTIS.
