Location and general description

Churchyard at Astall, OxfordshireA neat cotswold village with a fine manor and the attractive church dedicated to St Nicholas. It is off the beaten track and has always seemed peaceful when I have visited. The village lies on the southern side of the valley of the River Windrush. Upstream lie the villages of  Swinbrook, Oxon and Widford, Oxon and then the town of Burford, Oxon. Downstream lie the villages of Worsham and Minster Lovell, Oxon, then the town of Witney, Oxon. To the SSW lies Shilton, Oxon.

The HATTON family

The HATTON family of Widford, Oxon owned some land here. There no evidence of them in and around the churchyard.

The KILLMASTER family

There is a very small but attractive stained class lancet window dedicated "In Memory of Agnes Killmaster 1845-1922". Agnes (nee BRIGNELL?) and her husband Richard KILLMASTER (d1927) have a large granite tomb in a corner of the churchyard. Richard KILLMASTER, the forefather of these KILLMASTERs is buried at Swinbrook, Oxon.
