Childhood and education

On the 30 April 1830 she married John HICKS, son of John HICKS. Her account is continued under the Marriage section of John HICKS' Biography.

Time as a widow

Her husband John probably died in 1856 for on the 1861 Census she is shown as a widow and in service. She is in Bardfield Saling, Essex, but no road name is shown on the page.
There is also a family group at Long Green, Bardfield Saling, Essex, which appears to include two of the children who were with John & Susan on the 1841 Census, Henry and Ellen (called Helen). This group has no head and no parents listed. They also use the same locally-odd spelling HEICKS. The details are:
In the preceeding entry (Parsonage farm) is listed
In the one two before that (in Church Road) is listed
These may be significant given the inferred marriage of Sarah's eldest daughter to first GROUT then STOCK husbands.

On the 1871 Census she is listed at Greenfields in Felsted, Essex.  She is in service, a role often filled by those who were widowed. No marital status is given. On the 1881 Census she is listed at Van Yard, Stebbing, Essex, she is a Widow and in service.

Last Will and Testament

Probably 1887. The only candidate registration is for Sarah HICKS, aged 77, 1887 Sep Quarter, Dunmow, Vol 4a, Pg 318.
