Parents and family
John HICKS
Birth
John was born on 4 May 1812 in Bardfield Saling, Essex
Childhood and education
Employment
John
came from
Bardfield
Saling where he was an agricultural
labourer. He appears not to have ventured very far from
there for all
his life.
Marriage
On the 30 April 1830 he married Sarah STAINES, daughter of
Benjamin
STAINES and his wife Susannah.
On 23 Sept 1830 his daughter Susannah
HICKS was born, apparently having been conceived before wedlock. She
was Christened on 13 Feb 1831 at the Protestant Meeting, Mill Lane
Congregation, Stebbing, Essex.
Susanna
HICKS, born 23 September 1830, father John HICKS, labourer,
mother Sarah HICKS (nee STANES), place of abode Bardfield Saling,
registered in Stebbing, performed by Joseph MORISON (Mill Lane Registers, RG4 / Piece 1384 / Folio 11). She married James GROUT (1849?) then William
STOCK (1872?).
On 26 April 1832 his daughter, Emma Sarah HICKS was born. She was Christened on the 19 Aug 1832 at the
Protestant Meeting, Mill
Lane Congregation, Stebbing, Essex.
Emma Sarah HICKS, born in parish of Bardfield Saling
on 26 April 1832, father John HICKS, Lab., mother Sarah HICKS (nee
STANES), place of abode Bardfield Saling, registered in Stebbing,
signed J HICKS, performed by Joseph MORISON (Mill
Lane Registers, RG4 / Piece 1384 / Folio 17). She apparently married
James TURNER and died of heart trouble on 5 Apr 1870, Sweetings,
Lindsell,
Essex.
On 29 Sep 1834 his daughter, Hannah HICKS was born. She was Christened on the 24 May 1835 at the Protestant Meeting, Mill
Lane Congregation, Stebbing, Essex.
Hannah
daughter, born in the parish of Bardfield Saling on Sept'r 29 1834,
parents John HICKS, Lab'r, and Sarah HICKS formerly STANES, residing
opposite the parish church. No signatures. Performed by Jos. MORISON (Mill Lane Registers, RG4 / Piece
1384 / Folio
30).
The
reference to 'opposite the parish church' is of interest because it
implies they were at Arundels Farm, Bardfield Saling, Essex., which
occupies all the ground directly opposite.
About 1837 a daughter called Rebecca HICKS may have been born (unless the later census entry is a transcription error).
About 1839 his son Henry HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling, Essex.
Married Mary Anne
POLLEY (1864, Writtle).
About 1839 his son
Alfred
George HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling, Essex, d. 1922.
Married Phoebe C STEVENS (1873, Theydon Garnon)
The 1841 Census records the family at New Green, Bardfield Saling, Essex.
For many years the family lived at New Green, the main
eastward
extension of
Bardfield
Saling, Essex. The census refrences to 'New Green' are
ambiguous as they may refer to a number of houses lying along New Green
or to New Green Farm which lay towards the eastern end of the green. At that time the family unit comprised:
- John HICKS, 30, ag lab, born in county
- Sarah HICKS, 20, , born in county
- Susannah HICKS, 10, , born in county
- Emma HICKS, 9, , born in county
- Rebecca HICKS, 4, , born in county
- Alfred HICKS, 1 month, , born in county
- Henry HICKS, 2, , born in county
All
ages over 20 appear to have been converted to multiples of 5 years. The
name Rebecca is not too clear and could be Ranna and therefore a
transcription error for Hanna (the details on the census forms are
transcribed from the original returns). Henry, being older than Alfred
but listed later may have been the son of a relative. Listed
immediately after the KIRBY family is another unit comprising :
- Jonas HICKS, 25, ag lab, born in county
- Eliza HICKS, 25, , born in county
Listed immediately before the HICKS family and with the family of William and Elizabeth EVRETT is -
- Sarah PERRY,
25, ind, born in county
About 1843 his daughter Sarah HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling,
Essex. In 1861 she married David SACH.
About 1848 his daughter Selina HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling,
Essex , d. 1867?. Possibly
married Joseph CHOAT in 1864.
About 1851 his daughter Ellen HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling,
Essex. In 1869 she married John SWALLOW in Bardfield Saling.
John's
family do not appear on the 1851 Census, probably because the Barfield
Saling area falls amongst a handful of areas of Essex for which no records
exist.
About 1855 his daughter
Mary A. HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling,
Essex.
About 1856 his daughter Elizabeth HICKS was born in Bardfield Saling,
Essex.

Death
John must have died between 1855 and 1862 as the 1861 Census shows his
wife Sarah HICKS as a widow and in service. The BMD index has only
one John HICKS death registered in Dunmow
district between 1855 and 1862.
- Jun Quarter 1856, Dunmow, John HICKS, Vol 4a, pg 217
On the 1861 Census there is a family group that includes
no parents and which appears to include two of the children who were
with John & Susan on the 1841 Census, Henry and Ellen (called
Helen). The continuing story of this family and the details of this group are given on the
'Life as a widow' section of the Biography of Sarah STAINES.

At
one point he appears to have been a non-conformist as several
of his family were baptised in the Mill Lane Congregational Church at
the nearby village of
Stebbing.
Ellen's daughter Sarah SWALLOW is named on Susan's
death certificate.
The details about other HICKS families that
were formerly on this page have now moved to the
Bardfield
Saling page.
